Dual Grand National hero Tiger Roll will be among the headline acts at Gordon Elliott’s open morning as the Cullentra handler becomes the latest to throw open his doors, writes Jack Lacey-Hatton.

The 12-year-old brought the curtain down on a glittering career with a second-placed finish behind stablemate Delta Work in the cross-country at Cheltenham, a race he won three times, and received a hero’s welcome back in the parade ring.

Tiger Roll recently started his new career as a showhorse and was placed first in his class at Tullamore before appearing at the Dublin Horse Show.

“He (Tiger Roll) will be here, which will be great for those coming down,” said Elliott. “We’ll also have Silver Birch, Don Cossack and a few others that will be paraded.

“Hopefully a few more will come down off the back of that to see them. They are well loved by the public so it’ll be nice for a few of them to see them up close.

“It’s great to see Tiger Roll having a happy retirement and hopefully he can continue to enjoy himself out in the field.”

The racing public will relish the chance to get a glimpse behind the scenes at the famous yard to see how the Cullentra House operation runs on a day-to-day basis.

Those attending will be able to have a tour around the yard, watch racehorses on the gallops and meet the team that look after the horses.

And Elliott, who has already had a strong start to the 2022-23 National Hunt season with 53 winners, says those who come down will have plenty to get stuck into.

“We’ll have a bit of variety,” he said. “They’ll get to see the horses riding out, horses getting scoped and just have a good walk around the yard.

“Then if anyone has any questions we will obviously try and answer those and give some insight into what goes into running the yard and the team behind it.

“It’s just great that people can have a look around the yard and see the set-up.

“It’s always nice to get a good crowd down and let people in for a few hours.”

Anyone can attend the Open Morning at Elliott’s yard free of charge, those wishing to do so just need to register interest online prior to September 4.

It will be the first open morning for the County Meath-based handler since before the pandemic, an event he believes has been sorely missed.

“We hosted one a few years ago and it was definitely a successful event, and something we wanted to do again,” he said.

“It’s always nice to see so many friends of the yard. You can always see the excitement when people come down and have a wonder.

“We’ll try and answer as many of their questions as we can and hopefully those that come down get a lot out of it.”
