Gavin Cromwell is excited to welcome back old friends when he hosts his Trainer Open Morning on Sunday September 25, writes Jack Lacey-Hatton.

Cromwell has expanded his operation since last throwing open his doors prior to the pandemic back in 2019 and as a result of the various restrictions many owners haven’t been able to visit since. 

Those who do head to Danestown will be able to see some of the yard’s biggest names including Flooring Porter and Darver Star. 

Cheltenham hero Flooring Porter has won the last two renewals of the Stayers’ Hurdle and was last seen finishing second to Sire Du Berlais at Aintree in April.

“We’re going to be riding out a few horses for people to see and obviously have a few of the more popular faces down,” said Cromwell.

“Flooring Porter will be riding out. Darver Star will ride out and Vanillier as well who I think a few will want to see.

“Darver has had a good summer and we’ve been delighted with him recently. We’ll also have a couple of the flat ones riding out, including Sunset Shiraz and My Mate Mozzie so it’s a good mix.

“Obviously with Covid we haven’t hosted one [an Open Morning] for a while now.

“We really missed it last year, so we’re really looking forward to having everyone back down to the yard.

“It’ll be nice to see so many familiar faces.”

 

On the back of sustained success in recent years, the County Meath handler has continued to expand his operation installing a new gallop and larger stables. 

In fact, those who did last visit pre-pandemic may be forgiven for not recognising the place and Cromwell admits he is happy to have a break from the constant building work.

“The last build we had was just over two years ago,” he said. “It was just before Covid hit with quite a big building going in.

“We have built an isolation yard that as well, so we’ve expanded quite a lot recently and want to improve the quality.

“We actually had a new a gallop put in during lockdown, so it will be the first time to show that to the public.

“That was a great addition, we’re constantly trying to make improvements like every yard, but it will be good to take a little bit of a breather from constant building works for a while."
